Build 10041(Pt 2)

I’ve updated my laptop to Windows 10 Build 10041 as well, running into the same post-installation issues as in my previous article. In addition there were problems with the update process itself.

In Windows 10, the ability to install updates individually has been lost. The automatic updater would try to install the most recent critical updates to Windows Defender, and an Atheros driver update for the wireless adapter before it would attempt the build update. The driver update was unnecessary, the current driver was the recommended version.

The Build update would then fail after an hour or so of installing, and the laptop would roll back to the previous build. this happened three times and was beginning to be a headache. What I had to do was connect via Ethernet, open the Device Manager, expand Network adapters, uninstall the Atheros WiFi adapter, update to the new build, and re-install the WiFi adapter.

It’s been a week now, PC and laptop are running well with Build 10041 of Windows 10. All in all, Windows 10 has been easy on resources. My laptop is a secondhand Toshiba Satellite with 4G RAM, it came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed and Office 2007. It handled Windows 8.1 just fine, Windows 10 has not been a problem either. By the way, Office 2007 works great.

You’re gonna break something!

Fair enough, they warn you when signing up to the Microsoft Insider Program that there will be issues, that’s why we’ve downloaded it. We want to see what breaks.

Microsoft is counting on bugs to happen and has provided an Insider Hub launcher in the new Start Menu.

I’ll be honest, I’ve had to use this button more than once.

The 1st issue that I ran in to was a broken PC Settings launcher, I looked up a fix that had applied to a similar problem in early builds of Windows 8.1 and gave it a try. Start Menu, type CMD. In the Command Prompt copy and paste these instructions.

Powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\ImmersiveControlPanel\AppxManifest.xml

Hit enter and restart, problem solved.

My Windows 10 Capstone (Pt 1)

I’ve recently completed the Capstone Project requirements towards an AAS degree in Computer Support.

The Windows 10 Technical Preview was released shortly after the quarter began and provided a relevant topic for my project. I’d like to share with you, my final submission to instructors.

The Project:

The Capstone Project that I am proposing is my WordPress blog entitled WINDOWSTEN that will be focusing on Microsoft”s newly released Technical Preview of what will when known as Windows 10 when it is officially released to the public. This project will serve as a platform, to showcase the many skills I’ve obtained during my Worker Retraining here at Clark College. Among the skill-sets I will demonstrate are the following.

Installation of Operating Systems and Documentation.
Operating System Configuration and Use of Features and Applications.
Troubleshooting and Data Analysis.
Technical Writing.
Content Management, HTML, Web Design.
Computer Repair and Maintenance.
Use of Virtualization software.

My Plan:

The release of the Windows Technical Preview is being made available to IT professionals, students, bloggers, and those in the know through the Microsoft Insider Program as of October 5^th.

I have a WordPress blog that I’d began while enrolled in the WordPress Fundamentals course. It was originally started as a blog on Linux distributions, and Progressive Rock music.

I had titled the blog DISTROTECH. I hadn’t been able to devote much time to it after that quarter had ended yet had been looking for impetus to get blogging again.

My plan is to download the .iso files needed to created Virtual Machines using VMWare Workstation 11 with Windows 10 in order to test and review new features and functionality. As a participant in the insider program I’ll contribute feedback to the user forums and developers.

I will also upgrade an existing laptop that is currently running Windows 7 Home Premium to determine if the upgrade path is feasible. This Toshiba laptop has the Intel Celeron 900 Processor, 250 GB hard drive and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM.

In addition I was able to get an older Dell Latitude laptop that originally had Windows XP to test Windows 10 on. It has an Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750, 80gb HD. 2 GB RAM. and had been running Lubuntu with good results.
